Dr. Carter grew up in Roanoke, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. degree in 1996. In 2001 she obtained her D.D.S. from the Medical College of Virginia / Virginia Commonwealth University and completed a one year fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 2002. She received her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Case West Research University at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in 2004. Dr. Carter completed the process to become a board-certified pediatric dentist in 2008.

Dr. Carter is married to R.T. Carter, D.D.S. who has a general practice close by. They have two sons, Thomas and Carson. In her spare time, Dr. Carter enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family.


Dr. Martha Dawson Barnard grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, where she earned a B.S. degree in chemistry. In 1982 she received her D.D.S. degree at the Medical College of Virginia. She obtained her pediatric specialty training two years later at the Medical College of Georgia.

Dr. Dawson is married to W. Calvin Barnard, D.D.S., and they have three children: Joan, Juliet and John Calvin. She enjoys playing duplicate bridge, reading, cooking, and traveling.


Dr. Bates received his undergraduate Biology degree from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina as a summa cum laude graduate. To further his education, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina where he received his DMD degree with high honors and was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental society.

To become specially educated in orthodontics, Dr. Bates received his Master's Degree and Specialty Certificate in orthodontics from Virginia Commonwealth University. Through this training he was exposed to the latest orthodontic techniques and technology.

In addition, during his residency, Dr. Bates fell in love with his wife Taylor, and Richmond, and they decided to make it home. Dr. Bates and his wife are committed and active members of the Richmond community and are active members in Redemption Hill Church. They desire to support local businesses and artists and strive to highlight the cultural wealth that Richmond has to offer.

In their free time, Dr. Bates and his wife can be found exploring Virginia and enjoying the outdoors. Dr. Bates has also been known to photograph a wedding or two in support of his wife's photography business. The two also love working on their recently purchased, nearly 90 year old house.
